چکیده
ABSTRACT Truncilla macrodon¸ the Texas Fawnsfoot, is currently considered to be restricted Brazos and Colorado river drainages in central Texas, USA. Subfossil specimens resembling T. macrodon from shell middens Trinity drainage have raised questions about its presumptive range. Extant populations occupying are believed donaciformis, but species identity has not been assessed using molecular techniques. In this study, we set out use phylogeographic morphometric approaches resolve distribution of spp. with an emphasis on assessing drainage. Our analyses indicated individuals rather than ratios length, width height supports finding showed differentiation among macrodon, cognata donaciformis. These combined findings suggest range larger previously recognized includes Colorado, drainages. The status San Jacinto basin remains unclear due lack information historical or extant populations, recommend conservationists consider as part mussel fauna since shares embayment Molecular data also population distinct from, more genetically diverse than, populations. This difference suggests River should treated a separate management unit facilitate effective conservation recovery planning. study adds growing body literature highlighting utility freshwater mussels.

Phylogeographic analysis of the threatened and endangered superconglutinate-producing mussels of the genus Lampsilis (Bivalvia: Unionidae).
Several species of freshwater unionid mussels in the genus Lampsilis exhibit a remarkable reproductive strategy. Female mussels of these species enclose their larvae in a minnow-like lure, called a 'superconglutinate', to attract piscivorous fishes. When a fish attempts to ingest the superconglutinate the lure ruptures and the larvae are released to parasitize the fish. Of the four species of m...

15 صفحه اولDistribution, genetic analysis and conservation priorities for rare Texas freshwater molluscs in the genera Fusconaia and Pleurobema (Bivalvia: Unionidae)
BACKGROUND Freshwater bivalves in the order Unionoida are considered to be one of the most endangered groups of animals in North America. In Texas, where over 60% of unionids are rare or very rare, 15 species have been recently added to the state's list of threatened species, and 11 are under consideration for federal listing. Due to insufficient survey efforts in the past decades, however, pri...

A new species of freshwater mussel (Bivalvia: Unionidae), Pleurobema athearni, from the Coosa River Drainage of Alabama, USA
The Mobile Basin historically supported one of the most diverse freshwater mussel (Bivalvia: Unionidae) assemblages in North America. More than 65 species of mussels are known from the Basin, but it is difficult to determine how many species were present historically. The drainage's unique physical habitat was largely destroyed between the late 1800s and mid-1900s by impoundment and channel mod...
